China's legislature,... the National People's Congress opens its annual session in Beijing later today,... with a proposed constitutional amendment dominating the agenda.
The amendment would lift the two-term limit for the president,... allowing Xi Jinping to stay on for years... possibly decades to come.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
With the National People's Congress set to open,.. an amendment to the constitution would allow President Xi Jinping to extend his rule beyond two terms,... and possibly for life,... as the Communist Party of China's Central Committee has proposed removing the two-term limit for the post of president and vice president.
Despite concerns both at home and abroad,... the National People's Congress spokesman Zhang Yesui argued that while there are no limits for head of the party and the military, the president has such limits, as Xi, who took office in 2012, heads the party, the military and the presidency.
Zhang added that the move is "conducive to uphold the authority of the Central Committee with Xi Jinping at the core."
Zhang also stated that Beijing wants to avoid a trade war with the U.S., presenting China as a defender of the global trading system.
Stressing that there are more common interests between the two nations,... the spokesperson said cooperation is the only option for both countries.
In addition,... one of the highlights of the opening of the National People's Congress will be the return of Wang Qishan, who's set to take the post of vice president.
The 69-year-old was at the forefront of Xi Jinping's campaign against corruption, before stepping down as a Politburo Standing Committee member last autumn.
With around three-thousand delegates set to be present at the annual meeting of China's largely rubber-stamp parliament,... pundits are looking to see how this session, which will last around two weeks, will affect China and the rest of the world.
