A song about BMT in a nut shell. BMT stands for basic military training\r
\r
This video is dedicated to my 2nd batch of awesome recruits.\r
\r
As a Tekong sergeant, taking care of the discipline, welfare, knowledge, skills, fitness and personal issues of sixty odd recruits in a platoon is both mentally and physically demanding. There were times when I just wished that the recruits could POP earlier. But with every passing batch, whenever the thundering one check one echoes across the Floating Platform, and whenever I see them so jubilantly cry out POP LOH while thousands of jockey caps soar into the morning sky.I couldnt help but feel a powerful emotion cantering through my whole body.\r
\r
This emotion is complicated. It is the feeling of happiness because I finally got to see them conquer all of the challenges that we had set for them. It is also the sense of pride because I knew that I have played a part in making them grow into a better man for our homeland, his loved ones and himself. At the same time, it is the feeling of reluctance because I suddenly realized how difficult it was to say goodbye.\r
\r
To me, being a good Tekong sergent is NOT about how well you can teach the recruits, be it instilling discipline or imparting knowledge and skills. Instead, It is about how well you can learn from the recruits.it is about how much you are willing to constantly look for imperfections in your leadership by reflecting upon the reions and performances of those whom you are leading. Through my recruits, I have learnt empathy, composure, efficiency, confidence and many skills which I never knew I will ever have.\r
\r
To my 04/12 batch of POP-ed recruits from BMTC Ulysses company, I am NOT going to wish you a smooth sailing journey in your new NS life ahead because a smooth ride is boring and you can gain nothing out of it. I wish that you will find a rocky road with many junctions that can push you to new mental and physical limits. NS is a waste of time.yes it is.but it is only a waste of time because people choose to believe andthat way. I am not here to promote National Service. I am here to let you know that opportunies for you to learn and grow are everywhere, even in what some might deem as a waste of time, or from people whom you least expect to learn anything useful.\r
\r
We are Ulysses, AH WOO!
