Tornado engulfs car during tropical storm in Thailand

This is the terrifying moment a driver is confronted head-on by a raging tornado after getting caught in a tropical storm.

Anuchit Suchat, 35, was driving in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, last Wednesday afternoon when a sudden burst of heavy rain drenched the area.

The businessman thought he had passed the worst of it but then noticed the ominous dark cloud swirling towards him.

He said: ''I noticed there was something like smoke rising in the air. It turned out to be a twister, like a hurricane, and I slowed down because I didn't want to get too near.

''It was very windy and very scary. I slowed down but I was worried about the car in front which was in the path of the tornado.'

The freak weather phenomenon - a storm chaser's dream - dispersed without causing damage.

Elsewhere in the region, powerful winds blew down power lines and sent debris flying through the air in neighbouring Sakon Nakhon province.

The torrential rains and strong winds were caused by a high-pressure system moving in from China.
