Broadband Aboard the Boat

There are lots of options for mobile broadband but beware of the 'unlimited' options as they are not what they seem. Nobody at all offers a truly unlimited data plan, period.

GiffGaff and the like who claim to offer unlimited plans are quite disingenuous (I would call it plain old lies) as after around 6GB your speeds get throttled back and you can no longer tether which is totally useless for me as I have to work aboard Hannah the Narrowboat sending large graphics and music files across the world from my Mac which means I need full speed tethering.

Another problem we face on our boat is that these TV streaming apps such as Virgin Go, Sky Go, Netflix etc eat huge amounts of data which kind of nullifies the point of these apps as nobody can afford the data bills to watch them as an alternative to installing a satellite dish on your boat. Well I found a brilliant solution!

Three do a MiFi plan which includes free streaming of Netflix, Apple Music, Deezer and, most importantly something called TV Player which I had not previously heard of. Basically you can have a wide selection of Freeview channels without a subscription or you can pay £5.99 a month and get channels such as Discover, History, Nat Geo, Eurosport and more - a true alternative to installing a satellite dish and whats more you can watch it on your computer, iPad, iPhone etc.

Finally we have it all sorted!
