00:08 Next time I introduce you, try a little eye contact.
00:11 And next time, don't refer to me as your son, the half-baked writer.
00:15 You shouldn't need my approval to write.
00:17 Everyone needs approval, Joe.
00:20 [phone rings]
00:22 Hello?
00:23 Am I speaking to Mr. Gosselman?
00:25 I'd like my wife to get on the extension.
00:27 Hello, Iran?
00:29 It is my great honor to tell you, Mr. Gosselman,
00:31 that you have been chosen to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
00:35 Tell me this isn't some great big fat joke.
00:39 It's all real, darling.
00:41 Breathe.
00:43 Welcome to Stockholm. We are so delighted to have you here.
00:49 I came across some of your stories in the college journal. Beautifully written.
00:54 Joe had a very heavy hand as a teacher.
00:56 Did he encourage you to keep writing?
00:58 A writer writes because he has something personal to say.
01:02 You write with intelligence, but you're detached.
01:05 The characters are supposed to be detached. Especially the mother.
01:09 My wife doesn't write, thank God.
01:11 Otherwise, I'd suffer permanent writer's lock.
01:13 Don't ever think that you can get their approval.
01:17 Who's?
01:18 The men.
01:19 The ones who decide who gets to be taken seriously.
01:22 A writer has to write.
01:23 A writer has to be read, honey.
01:25 I am aware of Joe's various indiscretions.
01:29 His affairs have nothing to do with you.
01:31 That's a deep-seated fear of inadequacy.
01:35 Don't paint me as a victim.
01:38 I am much more interesting than that.
01:40 Don't walk away from me, Diamond!
01:45 I can't do it anymore.
01:47 I can't take it. I can't take the humiliation.
01:51 I can't take it. I can't take the humiliation.
01:55 What are we doing?
01:58 Joan, we're not bad people.
02:00 I think you are sick and tired of Joe Castleman.
02:04 I would like to convey to you the warm congratulations of the Swedish Academy.
02:08 You have reinvented the very nature of storytelling.
02:11 Tell me about yourself. Do you have an occupation?
02:13 I do.
02:14 And what is that?
02:16 I am a kingmaker.
