When a dog licks the air it can also be part of a convulsive complex and can indicate an underlying neurological problem, for example epilepsy, other disorders that affect the brain.

If you are noticing this new behavior and you are not sure of the cause, you can justify a trip to the vet. Before going to the vet, it is a good idea to take a video recording of the behavior and write down anything that may be causing the behavior.
