New Orleans legend, Tommy Ridgley, sings his Northern Soul two thousand pounds rarity, "My Love Gets Stronger". The song is particularly poignant as he was dying of cancer, unbeknown to us at the time, and wanted this to be his last ever performance. Tommy started singing in the 1940's and released his debut single "Shrewbury Blues" in 1949 from Imperial Records. In the 1950's he formed his group The Untouchables and recorded for labels such as Decca, Atlantic and Herald. His 1952 release "Tra-La-La" on Decca was later covered and made famous by Pat Boone. In the 1960's he signed with local Ric Records and released some singles which were to become local hits, although none of them broke through to create a stir nationally. These sides included "Double-Eyed Whammy" and "I've Heard That Story Before". During the 1970's and 80's, there were less recording opportunities for Ridgley, however, he continued to record and perform. He performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival every year from 1972 until his death. We recorded/filmed this track for our documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" and if you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is a must see. We have nearly all the biggest blockbusters, "Out On The Floor", "Night Owl', "I'm On My Way", "Time Will Pass You By", "Blowing My Mind To Pieces", "Do I Love You", all sung by the original singers. We believe this will go down in history as the greatest Northern Soul collection of all time.
