Classic and much adored diva, Jo Armstead, performs her classic Blackpool Mecca anthem "I Feel An Urge Coming On". Jo Armstead started out as one of The Ikettes, with Ike And Tina Turner. Jo had a huge hit with Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson when they wrote "Lets Go Get Stoned" for Ray Charles. After writing a chain of hits together, Nick and Valerie joined Motown, and became legendary by writing all of the hits for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. At this time, Jo Armstead moved to Chicago and with her husband formed local label Giant Records. She released a string of wonderful soul singles as a solo artist, including the Northern Soul smash "I Feel An Urge Coming On", and her biggest hit, "Stone Good Lover". Jo then went on to write an even bigger hit, "Casanova" for Ruby Andrews, and Garland Green's million selling "Jealous Kind Of Fella", as well as classics by Carl Carlton, Jimmy Scott, and Betty Everett. Later in 1972 she signed to Stax Records and their label, Gospel Truth, where she first recorded the amazing gem, "I Got The Vibes", a beautiful mid tempo piece of sizzling wonderfulness. This was absolutely massive at Blackpool Mecca's legendary Highland Room, where, after the success of The Carstairs record, it fitted smack dab exactly into the ethos of the whole new sound they were taking forward. In 1998 we redid both of her Northern Soul anthems with her, and filmed her in New York for our mega-documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul".
