The Sapphires - Gotta Have Your Love

Here is Carol Jackson, lead singer of the legendary Philadelphia group The Sapphires, singing "Gotta Have Your Love". This song was so popular on the ABC label as far back as the days of the Twisted Wheel Club in Manchester, the first home of Northern Soul. My late great best friend Les Cokell, the DJ there, played it on its original UK release label, HMV Records. Les always adored it. We filmed this for our legendary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" documentary. The Sapphires comprised of Carol Jackson (who is now married and known as Carol Canty), George Gainer and Joe Livingston. The Sapphires were a vocal trio from Philadelphia, signed to the Swan record label by producer Jerry Ross, the trio's first single releases were on that imprint. Their first single was "Where Is Johnny Now?", the backing group consisted of several contributors to the Philadelphia International empire at a later date. These included Leon Huff, Thom Bell, Bobby Eli, Joe Macho and Bobby Martin. Their follow up song was entitled "Who Do You Love?", a song that made the pop charts, peaking at number 25 in 1964. Further singles, "I Found Out Too Late" and "Gotta Be More Than Friends" were less successful. Their later songs proved to be highly popular on the Northern Soul scene. Song including "Gotta Have Your Love", which reached number 33 on the R&B charts in 1965, "Evil One", "Gonna Be a Big Thing" and "Slow Fizz". Anyone who is a fan of my work should be easily able to spot who make up these new Sapphires especially to back Carol, who is, after all, the one and only original lead singer. This was filmed in 1998, while we were filming our marathon documentary "The Strange World of Northern Soul". Carol was more than happy to make this one and only performance especially for us and I am so glad that she did.
