“Asperitas” clouds were officially accepted to the World Meteorological Organization’s International Cloud Atlas as a new cloud type in 2017, changing the name from “Asperatus” which was the unofficial name. AccuWeather Meteorologist & Social Media Manager Jesse Ferrell says, “Asperitas is a new type of cloud classified in 2017 although it has been shared on Social Media since the mid-2000s. The cloud is rare and occurs at sharp boundaries of dry and moist air.”
