Holiday time in the South of France and that means driving around in a very appropriate car; the Fiat 500 Riva edition. Picked up as a rental it is a lovely thing to look at, but does it have enough go? Not for maximising enjoyment of the lovely roads nearby but let's give it a try and see what it's like anyway.

The Fiat 500 Riva special edition is a pretty unique edition with exclusive details inside and out. It includes a wide series of sophisticated details borrowed from Riva's Aquariva Super yacht. The interior has Ivory white leather seats with blue piping and hand painted mahogany wood. The outside is a combination of the Sera Blue paint colour and chrome details on the bonnet, the 16-inch alloy wheels with specific blue diamond finishing and the chrome Riva badges on the tailgate and front wings.

It's a great companion but my major concern with this convertible is the engine at the front. This particular model is fitted with a 1.2 petrol engine producing a whopping 69 hp, which is simply not sufficient on the wonderful mountain roads near Nice and Cannes. The acceleration from 0 to 62 mph takes 12.9 seconds and the top speed is only 99mph.

After an initial drive through the countryside, the outcome was clear, let’s stay near the sea for the next few days. This ‘roadyacht’ clearly feels a lot more at home closer to the Azure Blue sea.

Thanks for watching, Tim
