Animal lovers inundate kennels wanting to give UK's most unloved dog a home

Maggie the whippet-cross has spent 11 years being overlooked by around 50,000 potential owners since being abandoned by a family in 2003. But her fortunes have changed almost overnight after dog lovers heard about her story and flocked to offer the Maggie a new home. Serendipity Kennels in Cellarhead, Staffs., said they had received hundreds of calls from people from as far away as Canada and the USA. Other prospective owners from across England, Scotland and Wales have also expressed their interest meaning Maggie's search for a home appears to be over. Staff at re-homing charity Animal Lifeline will now assess the properties to check which ones are the most suitable for the pooch. Steve Woodward, 56, who runs Serendipity Kennels, said Maggie had gone from being their most unwanted dog to their star attraction.
