CHATTAROY, WASHINGTON — In recent reports, an American mom talks about how she needs wash her baby boy in bleach to help protect him from disease.

Alicia Barber's infant son Jamison suffers from Harlequin ichthyosis, a rare genetic skin condition and needs round-the-clock care.

Because of this, Barber needs to bathe him in bleach two times per week to stave off infection. According to Metro, Barber needs to use clorox while washing Jamison. That is painful for him, so he's on morphine while being washed.

In addition to that, Jamison is also bathed twice for 45 minutes daily, and then rubbed with a sandpaper rag to help shed his skin.

According to rarediseases.org, Jamison's condition causes thick layers of plate-like skin scale to form. If untreated, the skin can make it difficult for the child to breath and eat. Approximately one in half a million suffer with the condition.

Barber's trying to raise awareness of her son's condition and is hoping to attend a medical conference that addresses it specifically. It takes place in in Nashville, Tennessee and the family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with the cost. So far, they've raised closed to $10,000, blowing way past their $6,000 target.
