Dementia affects tens of millions of people worldwide with symptoms ranging from memory loss to mental impairment. There's no cure but medications may "temporarily improve some symptoms." To get the proper treatment though, there must be an early detection of dementia and the correct identification of the type of dementia a patient has. According to a new study, MRI brain scans "can help doctors tell which people with certain thinking and memory problems might go on to develop dementia with Lewy bodies rather than Alzheimer's disease." Researchers discovered that those who "eventually developed Lewy body dementia" lacked the shrinkage of the hippocampus.
