Beyond Peking Opera, music culture in China has many forms, such as a seated style of story telling popular in southern China.

Eight Tone Sitting Singing, also known as Stool Opera is one of the traditional styles of singing that ultimately contributed to the Buyi Opera. "Eight tones" refers to playing the music with eight different folk instruments. Often, it's also referred to as "the living sound fossil".
