BOLOGNA Airport was rocked by a fireball explosion on a road just outside the perimeter fence on August 6.

Here's what we know so far - including information on any travel delays at the popular tourist destination in Italy.

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport is around 3.7 miles north west of the city centre in northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna region.

It is the seventh busiest airport in Italy with 7.7million passengers passing through in 2016.

Terrified residents said that their houses "shook" from the blast at around 12.50pm local time.

Police said a car transporter collided with a fuel tanker on a bypass close to the airport in Borgo Panigale.

Video showed thick smoke billowing from the crash scene before a vast orange fireball fills the sky as a man appears to be engulfed by flames.

A flyover reportedly collapsed under the force of the explosion, spreading the fire to a Peugeot dealership where several cars caught fire.

Firefighters were forced back by the intense heat as they tried to stop the flames spreading further.

Ambulance crews were also in attendance as traffic backed up on the busy road.

At least two people were reported dead and 56 injured - 14 of them seriously.

Police said on Twitter: "Due to an accident on the highway, an explosion occurred resulting in a fire at Via Marco Emilio Lepido.

"Circulation compromised, not only on the motorway, but also in the Borgo Panigale area."
