In an age where modern heroes are influencing a whole new generation, the achievements of Jeffrey Vincent Smith, M.B.E., remain unsurpassed. He is the world's best ever all-round off-road competitor in motocross, trials and enduros.
Jeff began his career at the young age of 17 and competed when the sport was raw, risky and down-to-earth. Between 1953 and 1971 JVS won more national and international titles than any rider. His achievements include two World Motocross Championships, two British Trials Championships, multiple British Experts Trial wins, four individual race wins in the Motocross des Nations and three ISDE Gold Medals.
He became a household name and a favourite in the 1960s, when motocross was a regular live feature on BBC Grandstand. When Britain pre-empted the world in the sport, Jeff was a leading light.
His story is recounted here by Jeff himself, who looks back over his remarkable career. Alongside the memories of former team mate and BSA competition manager Brian Martin, Jeff's personal and often funny account is interspersed with terrific archive footage of trials and scrambles events from the 1950s and 1960s.
