Teacher John Corcoran Learned to Read After Years in the Classroom

John Corcoran made an extremely successful life for himself between graduating college, becoming a teacher, and even becoming a millionaire — all while secretly not being able to read.

He described his early life as being “full of joy” but said that he couldn’t succeed in the classroom. Though he struggled academically, he also had impressive athletic skills, which created the illusion that he was perfectly well-adjusted in school. He got friends to help him cheat his way through classes and headed to college with an athletic scholarship.

Once in college, Corcoran says he cheated in almost every course he took. By the time he reached graduation, he said he had a master key to every building. He said that “nobody was looking for the teacher to be a non-reader,’ which is why he decided to pursue teaching as a career.

“I really worked hard to put on a show. I showed more visuals — movies and education films and then we’d have discussions,” he explained.

He even said he would make up stories while reading to his young daughter. The first person Corcoran confessed to regarding his illiteracy was his wife.

After listening to Barbara Bush on the television, whose cause as First Lady was taking on adult illiteracy, Corcoran learned that there were many others like him in the country. This led him to seek out help and, after 13 months of one-on-one instruction, he started to read on his own.

“The truth is, it’s never too late to learn to read,” he said. “And our brains are capable.”
