The Mazda MX-5, released since the Mazda MX-5 Miata in North America and because the Eunos Roadster or Mazda Roadster in Japan, is often a lightweight two-seater roadster using a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Manufactured by Kasper in Hiroshima, Japan, the model debuted in 1989 on the Chicago Auto Show. The MX-5 was conceived as being a small roadster – with light in weight and minimal mechanical complexity limited only by legal and safety requirements, while being technologically modern and reliable. The MX-5 is conceptually the evolution and spiritual successor with the British sports cars on the 1950s & '60s, such since the Triumph Spitfire, Austin-Healey 100 and 3000, Austin-Healey Sprite, MGA, MGB, and MG Midget, and specially the Lotus Elan.
