The Eysturoy sub – sea tunnel.
The Eysturoy sub-sea tunnel will be some 11 kilometres long, making it the longest sub-sea tunnel on the Faroe Islands. By way of comparison, the Vágar and Norðoy tunnels are 4.9 kilometres and 6.2 kilometres long, respectively.
The tunnel will shorten the travel distance from Tórshavn to Runavík from 55 kilometres to 17 kilometres. The travel distance from Tórshavn to Strendur will also be shortened from 55 kilometres to 17 kilometres. The 64-minute drive will be shortened to 16 minutes. The drive from Tórshavn to Klaksvík will be shortened from 68 minutes to 36 minutes.
It is estimated that more than 6000 vehicles will drive through the tunnel every day.
