On 11th of November 1918, the guns finally fell silent on a war that had convulsed the world since that fateful day in July, 1914 (the 28th of the month), when Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated in Sarajevo. Being a British colony, India sent nearly 14 lakh soldiers to the war and spent almost £146.2 million towards the war’s cost. Football was used to recruit men, who were “good sportsmen” into the forces and it was also played by troops to keep the morale high. The war was also fought in East Africa where imperial powers had colonies. World War I led to the death of nearly 3,00,000 Africans.
