Stocks sold off after the arrest of a Chinese telecommunications company executive became a surprising wild card threatening a resolution to the U.S.-China trade war.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down around 80 points, or zero-point-three percent, to 24,947.
The S&P 500 shed zero-point-one-five percent to just below 2,700.
The Nasdaq lost zero-point-four percent to 7,188.

European markets finished sharply lower Thursday with shares in Germany dropping the most.
The DAX was down nearly three-and-a-half percent.
France's CAC 40 ended three-point-three percent lower.
London's FTSE 100 also had a day to forget,... down over three-point-one percent.
