Neo-Nazi Who Killed Heather Heyer Sentenced to Over 400 Years in Jail A jury handed down the sentence to James Alex Fields Jr. for killing
Heather Heyer and injuring 35 others after he plowed his car into a group of counter-protestors during the
"Unite the Right" rally
in Charlottesville last year. The sentence follows a first-degree murder conviction handed down to Fields Jr. In addition, he also faces federal hate crime charges, which allow for the death penalty. Before the sentencing, Fields' attorneys had asked the jury to consider their client's
mental state. During the trial, a psychologist testified that Fields was diagnosed with
bipolar disorder and schizoid personality disorder at the ages of 6 and 14, respectively. A judge will now decide whether to sign off on the jury's recommended sentence on March 29, 2019.
