In 1990, Adam Sandler and Chris Farley both started on Saturday Night Live, marking the beginning of one of the show's most iconic eras. Five years later they were both fired—or quit. It's unclear.
“We kind of quit at the same time as being fired. It was the end of the run for us," Sandler told The Daily Beast in 2014. "The fact that me and him got fired? Who knows. We were on it for a few years, had our run, and everything happens for a reason. We kind of understood because we did our thing. It hurt a lot at the time because we were young and didn’t know where we were going, but it all worked out.”
But, they'd already laid the foundation for careers beyond SNL. That same year, Sandler appeared in Billy Madison (which featured Farley as the unforgettable bus driver). And Farley co-starred in Tommy Boy with David Spade.
Then tragically, two years later in 1997, Farley died of a drug overdose just as his acting career was taking off. Yesterday, on the 21 year anniversary of Farley's death, Netflix shared the video of Adam Sandler's touching tribute to his late friend from his excellent new stand-up special 100% Fresh.
"He was a one-man party," Sandler sings, describing the first time he saw Farley. He then goes on to reference some of Farley's most iconic sketches, including the Gap Girls, “Van Down by the River," the “Chippendales” sketch, the Super Fans, and the Lunch Lady. He talks about the last time he hung out with Farley at Tim Meadows's wedding.
It's truly a touching performance. And with a callback to the musical sketches that first made Sandler famous on Saturday Night Live, it marks the comedian reconnecting with his roots, and finding the heart in what he does best.
