Government Shutdown Forces FDA
to Stop Food Inspections Due to the partial shutdown,
food inspectors are working without pay. FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb says the agency is looking to bring back around 150 employees as early
as next week, to continue inspections of the foods most susceptible to contamination, such as cheese. The shutdown has led Gottlieb to put off at least 50 inspections of facilities with high-risk food. Scott Gottlieb, via statement Inspections are still being carried out by the USDA, but the FDA makes over 150 of their
own per week.
