In this video I'm making a book safe, or, a book with a secret compartment. This was really a series of experiments with materials which I went through so that I could learn about the materials I was working with, i didn't know if it would work when I started, and a few things did work differently to how I thought they would.

One of the things that I do as an artist is to just accept that things don't always work as expected, you have to allow yourself to make mistakes if you want to learn how materials work, without mistakes you can't learn new and exciting ways to make things.

I decided at the start of this just to film it happening, and to just accept it if things went wrong, not to do a polished video showing the 'correct' way to do this, instead to just show how I did it. Ironically it actually turned out quite nicely, and I'm quite happy with the book safe as an object. I suspect that part of it working so well was the fact that I wasn't expecting it to go smoothly.

I don't know about anybody else, but for me personally I need to make my own mistakes in order to learn how to do stuff. Mistakes are good.
