00:00Star Trek Discovery is a prequel.
00:03We're going back in time, and we're setting up the landscape.
00:07The only character that connects us is the character of Sarek.
00:10The Star Trek favorite, Sarek, father of Spock.
00:15Commander Burnham.
00:16Hello, Sarek.
00:17Sarek's really important to, I think, Star Trek fans as a whole,
00:22but also to us, because he is Burnham's foster father.
00:27He calls Burnham his ward, not really his daughter, but his ward,
00:30and has recognized that she no longer fits in in Vulcan in the way that Vulcan is progressing.
00:37Happy to see you.
00:38So many years, and still you allow emotional considerations to impede your logic.
00:43They inform my logic.
00:46He's a key character. We find out a lot about who Spock is because of him,
00:50but now we're going back in time and finding out, well, who was he as a younger man?
00:54Sarek is fascinating because he has a human wife,
00:57and through that process of interacting with a human and loving a human,
01:01it's given him an interesting perspective on how to raise his child.
01:05He certainly has an affinity for humans and a curiosity about humans,
01:09but now he's beginning to be able to actually somewhat experience what a human feels.
01:18Sarek is someone who's always seen the potential of humankind
01:22and wants to push humans to the best of their ability.
01:25Inviolable honor-shame dynamics.
01:27Correct.
01:28So it makes perfect sense that he wants her educated in the Vulcan way.
01:32Klingon homeworld Kronos.
01:34And welcoming to the Federation.
01:35Correct.
01:36He wants a lot for her, and he's very proud of her,
01:38but I also think he doesn't communicate that to her.
01:43I'm most certain you did not call me for emotional solace.
01:46I need your help.
01:48She very much needs his approval.
01:51She calls on him and, you know, asks for help.
01:54Be very careful that your assumptions are not being driven by your past.
02:00As Burnham finds herself, she's also going to start thinking about
02:05how being raised on Vulcan may have not been the best choice for her.
02:09You were never one to bolster my self-esteem.
02:14Perhaps that is where I failed you.
02:17I think that she feels the absence of human warmth from him.
02:24And so as any young person bumping up against how they were raised,
02:30there's ultimately going to be quite a bit of conflict
02:32between Sarek and Burnham.
02:34And, you know, that's all stuff, really juicy stuff,
02:37that we're eager to explore.
02:41Live long and prosper.

03:24It feels incredibly surreal to step into the Star Trek universe.
03:28It's stepping into a legacy.
03:30Star Trek has been with us for 50 years,
03:33and it's our responsibility to keep it exciting.
03:36Two to transport.
03:38We needed to maintain the core of what Trek has always been about,
03:41and yet the scope and scale needed to expand
03:45so far beyond anything that had been in television before.
03:51Captain, warp signatures detected.
03:54Contact Starfleet command.
03:56Tell them we have engaged the Klingons.
04:02Star Trek Discovery takes place 10 years before the original show
04:06with Kirk and Spock.
04:07There's all of these opportunities to reveal things to fans.
04:10It lays the groundwork for a lot of the mythology.
04:14Ambassador Sarek, it is good to see you again.
04:17What have you done out there on the edge of Federation space?
04:20It's storytelling in Shakespearean proportions.
04:29So many people who've been contributing their talents
04:32behind the scenes or in front of the camera,
04:35they are fans of the show, they are fans of the franchise.
04:38Their love and knowledge and enthusiasm is so invigorating.
04:42You just get lost in it.
04:44We have practical sets which are startling.
04:47It's art. It's magic.
04:50It's incredible what the production people have done.
04:53It's a beautiful, beautiful space, and it helps you in your acting.
04:56My people were biologically determined to sense the coming of death.
05:01I sense it coming now.
05:06Most science fiction speaks to our fears.
05:09I've always loved Star Trek because it talks about who we aspire to be.
05:13Not just individually, but who do we want to be as human beings?
05:16At its core, it's really about cultures coming together,
05:20rising above differences, and achieving real peace.
05:23Starfleet will be challenged with their internal sense
05:27of what is right and what is wrong.
05:29Not all is as it seems.
05:31Discovery is a completely new way of telling a Star Trek story
05:34in a way that you might not expect.
05:36You should watch carefully.
05:39LAUGHS
05:42Starfleet doesn't fire first.
05:45I'm trying to save you.
05:48I'm trying to save all of you.
06:04Hi, guys. How are you?
06:06Star Trek Discovery.
06:09If I could go back and tell my eight-year-old self
06:11that I would be standing up here in front of you,
06:13I wouldn't believe myself.
06:15I got that fateful, infamous call where you pick up the phone
06:19and they want you to do Star Trek.
06:21My head exploded at that moment.
06:23When I first started thinking of what I would do for a main theme,
06:27I first needed to feel like I was in the world of Star Trek.
06:30Even though there's a lot of action in our show,
06:32I wanted to really play into how these characters are feeling.
06:35All right, we're going to start with Star Trek Discovery main title.
06:40One, two.
06:58The music of Trek is a critical part of the experience of Trek.
07:03The original Alexander Kurge theme
07:05is one of the most iconic and memorable themes of all time.
07:08It's built into the DNA of the show.
07:10So there's a beautiful segueing in and out of the original theme
07:12into the more modern theme.

08:34..is born from chaos.
08:38The world doesn't always adhere to logic.
08:42Sometimes down is up.
08:49And sometimes when you're lost...
08:55..you're found.
09:02The Klingon Empire has been in disarray for generations.
09:07We've encountered them.
09:11We have been waiting for someone worthy of our attention.
