Home minister Rajnath Singh moves BJP brass over his son 'rumours'

Home minister Rajnath Singh, upset with a ministerial colleague for spreading what Singh says are malicious and false stories about his son, has raised the matter with the highest echelons of BJP and RSS.

This episode indicates divisions at the high table of the Modi government. Senior BJP leaders say this is a reflection of "a power struggle".

For a few weeks now, talk that the home minister's son, Pankaj Singh, was recently ticked off by the prime minister for unsavory political conduct has swirled around Delhi's political circles, allegations that have raised hackles of Singh who sees it as the handiwork of a party rival, an influential BJP leader.

"If someone raises questions about my family's integrity and honour, I'm not going to take it lying down. God will punish those who are playing this dirty game," Singh is believed to have told close aides in the party.

At least three senior BJP leaders confirmed to ET that Singh had complained about this leader to BJP and Sangh's top leadership, accusing him of spreading malicious and false stories. "He has left it to the party leadership and relevant authorities to deal with the issue," said a party leader, seeking anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

BJP leaders ET spoke to confirmed the home minister taking up the matter with BJP President Amit Shah and the RSS leadership. These leaders and others who spoke to ET for this report did so on the condition they not be identified. Singh and Shah did not respond to request for comments. RSS spokesperson Manmohan Vaidya refused comment. All BJP spokespersons refused comment when contacted by ET.

Over the past few weeks, Delhi's political circles have been abuzz with rumours that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had allegedly and on several occasions upbraided certain ministers over various aspects of their conduct.

A BJP leader said this "false story on the home minister's son that was spread by another minister has deeply hurt Singh and after much deliberation the home minister raised the issue with the BJP and RSS chiefs". Pankaj Singh did not respond to ET's requests for comments.

This BJP leader said Rajnath Singh hasn't raised the matter directly with the minister who the home minister feels is responsible for "these rumours". "He has left that for the party and Sangh leadership," this BJP leader said.

Another BJP leader said "the manner these rumours were circulated and gained traction are harmful for the party and the government... this only creates distrust in the government and makes our government appear as (if) it is full of intrigue".

"Neither the PM nor Shah functions in this manner...they have a direct political and administrative style. Spreading such false stories creates a very wrong impression."
