Why do Indian farmers commit suicide?

A reply on farmer suicides this year by Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh in Parliament in which a reference to love affairs and drugs being a cause triggered a massive storm with the Opposition parties accusing the government of being insensitive to more than 1400 such deaths last year and nearly 270 this year.
