BJP hardens stand on compensation for Seemandhra via amendments

Yet another twist in the Telangana tale saw the contentious bill being deferred in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday as BJP sought to extract a substantial financial commitment for Seemandhra from the government as the condition for facilitating passage of the legislation which is designed to boost Congress's prospects in the Telangana region.

BJP is insisting on a specific commitment through the bill itself to compensate Seemandhra for the loss of resource-rich Hyderabad, and has spurned the government's contention that the matter be referred to the Finance Commission. The main opposition is also asking for a commitment that Seemandhra region, identified as Andhra Pradesh in the bill, benefits from the Polavaran project.

The battle between the two parties saw Congress chief Sonia Gandhi backing special status for Seemandhra while BJP leaders called for a Rs 10,000 crore commitment for the region as initial compensation.
