After EC backing, Varanasi DM clarifies on Modi decision

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) over the denial of permission for Narendra Modi's rally in Varanasi. A delegation of senior BJP leaders met EC officials in New Delhi and lodged a complaint against the Returning Officer who barred Modi from holding a rally in Beniabagh.

"Six of us met the EC and lodged a complaint against the Returning Officer. His behaviour was biased. He violated the EC's guidelines, and prevented free and fair elections," senior leader Venkaiah Naidu said. The party has demanded that the Returning Officer be replaced.
The party is also holding a massive protest in Varanasi over the denial of permission. The BJP workers gathered outside the Benaras Hindu University in large numbers for the dharna.
