Casting a shadow over his five-day visit to the United States, a US federal court has issued a summons to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the 2012 Gujarat riots, citing a lawyer from the firm that represents plaintiffs.
Modi is currently on his way to New York to attend the UN General Assembly. He is scheduled to visit Washington, DC, on Monday for meetings with President Obama and other US leaders.
The paper said, quoting lawyer Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, that” the summons issued by the Federal Court of Southern District of New York requires Mr. Modi to respond within 21 days after it is served.”
According to the newspaper, the lawsuit, “filed by the American Justice Center (AJC), a non-profit human rights organisation identified among the plaintiffs ‘two survivors of the horrific and organized violence of Gujarat 2002’, and called for a response from Mr. Modi based on the Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) and the Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA).”
