Don Boyd’s Lucia: a postmodern reinterpretation of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor (itself a hybrid of Sir Walter Scott's novel Bride Of Lammermoor). Lucia adheres steadfastly to the tragic, operatic triumvirate of love, hate and death, in its tale of Kate, a young woman torn between duty and desire. Exploring how relationships within an acting company form while they are on the road, Lucia is an outrageous mix of contemporary romance, 18th-century tragedy and lush opera. The plot follows Kate, a young opera singer obliged to marry to save her family home. But while rehearsing a performance of Lucia, she falls for her co-star. Soon, the line between reality and fiction becomes bizarrely irrelevant.
