Political strife at South Korea's National Assembly has intensified over a move to give several bills fast-track status.
The committees for judiciary and political reform are planning to meet sometime today to give fast-track status to bills on electoral reform... and on creating an independent body to investigate corruption among high-ranking government officials.
Four parties,.... without the main opposition Liberty Korea Party,... agreed earlier this week to fast track the electoral bill in particular because parliament has to finalize the electoral map ahead of the next year's general elections.
But their plan has met fierce resistance from the LKP,... which says the election law needs bipartisan agreement.
The fast-track move has also sparked backlash from some lawmakers in the minor opposition Bareun Mirae Party.
Their leadership has replaced committee members who might have voted against the fast-track bills... because those votes are critical to getting the designations approved.
