Shortly after Saturday Night Live’s cold open “It’s A Wonderful Trump” aired this past weekend, the president took to Twitter to criticize the show and NBC for what he deemed to be “one-sided coverage” and defamation. The sketch, which riffed on the 1946 Christmas classic It’s A Wonderful Life, gleefully envisioned a parallel universe in which Hillary Clinton had visited Wisconsin “just once” during the election and, as a result, Donald Trump never won the presidency.
In response, Trump questioned whether such a skit was even legal, alleging in an early-morning tweet that SNL was a mere “Democrat spin machine” that should be “tested in court.” Despite having previously appeared on the show as a host, Trump has made it clear before that he isn’t laughing at jokes about his administration. And now that he has suggested that SNL should be challenged in court over the spoof, the show has joined a long list of media outlets that have faced similar threats.
