Debris plunged to the ground in a shopping mall when part of an escalator collapsed due to heavy rain.

Hundreds of people were inside the upmarket building in Mandaluyong City, the Philippines on May 8 afternoon when the tropical downpour began.

Chunks of concrete from the firth floor escalator at The Podium mall in the Ortigas Center dropped to the ground floor and landed on a coffee booth.

Fortunately, nobody was injured and the staff rushed to secure the area.

Mall bosses said in a statement that strong rain caused the damage.

"The strong rains caused damages to an isolated portion of the ceiling in The Podium,’’ they said.

''To ensure the safety of our customers, the area has been temporarily cordoned off. Repair and maintenance works will commence once the weather improves.''
