Travelling is a great necessity for many with a curiosity about people and cultures as well as those excited to discover the world. But it's useful to exercise caution all the while, especially if you're going solo into unfamiliar territory. Here's are some pointers to help you stay safe on your next trip. First, use multiple means to stay connected with friends and relatives. Social networks, smartphone apps and an international SIM card if necessary. Keep valuables locked away, out of sight of others and take them out only when you need them. Thoroughly research your accommodation, the local area's transport links and the wider area's norms and customs. Also, if applicable, learn simple phrases in the local language in case of emergency. Take a supply of medication you may need and a first aid kit. Do your best not to stand out or look hopelessly lost, especially if there are known crime issues or a frequent blind eye towards harassement in the country or region. Lastly, communicate and make friends, but know if you're being pestered, followed, or being taken advantage of in anyway, and shy away from confrontation, not from your sense of adventure or the opportunities to discover.
