Asus was founded in 1989 by T.H. Tung, Ted Hsu, Wayne Hsieh and M.T. Liao, all former employees of major Taiwanese firm Acer. Johnny Shih, a long serving chief engineer made a breakthrough in the early 1990s with the integration of Intel chips in their products. Pooling talent from the tech world was the ethos which helped bring Stan Shih (no relation) into the equation. Stan Shih was an expert engineer with Acer who was able to train the young Asus staff, not just to produce their own high performing equipment. But also to master design and appearance as Stan Shih, an admirer of the arts was unimpressed by the 'second-grade' like products he saw during Asus' earliest days. Asus relies on it's own talent and manufactures all its own hardware. The company which started with simple motherboards and personal computers has branched out into laptops, netbooks, tablets and mobile phones. Matching performance with beautiful design has helped Asus become the world's fifth largest vendor of consumer electronics in the world. Acer is the sixth largest.
