Blue eyes - a gift from aliens?

This mysterious appearance of the blue-eye mutation causes a lot of perplexity. For millions of years people had dark eyes and suddenly - boom! - a blue-eyed child is born among them from the usual dark-eyed parents. Why did it take so long? Why mutation manifested itself in this particular period of time that was very prosperous in terms of climate and living conditions? What could provoke its occurrence? And why are there relatively few blue-eyed people among the total population of the Earth?
