Walmart Uses AI-Powered
Cameras to Track Checkout Theft Walmart recently confirmed to Business Insider
that they have been using computer vision technology
to deter theft in more than 1,000 stores. The surveillance program, dubbed Missed Scan Detection,
is in place to monitor both self and manned checkouts. It operates by using cameras to track and
analyze activities and notify a Walmart employee
when a potential theft is occurring. An estimated 1.33% of U.S. retailers revenues
are lost due to shrinkage, which is defined as losses
due to theft, scanning errors, fraud and other causes. LeMia Jenkins, a spokeswoman for Walmart,
said the company has invested over
$500 million in anti-theft efforts. LeMia Jenkins, via
Business Insider LeMia also reported that shrink rates have declined in
stores that have the Missed Scan Detection technology.
