Yi Long is a Chinese Wushu and Sanshou kickboxer who competes in the Super Welterweight, Welterweight and Super Middleweight divisions. Born in Dezhou, Shandong, Yi is self-trained in Shaolin Kung Fu. He was the 2007 Guangdong Foshan International Wing Chun champion. In the summer of 2009, he began to fight in Wu Lin Feng.
Yi Long, a Shaolin Monk and competitive fighter doesn’t play by the same rules that most fighters observe. Or most humans for that matter. Typically, you win fights by not getting hit more than the other person. There are some exceptions to this rule, but nothing like Yi Long.
Another fighter trying Yi Long’s strategy would be left absolutely destroyed, possibly with brain damage. It wouldn’t even be close in a fight. Yi Long lets the other guy tire himself out by beating on him, then Yi Long casually brutalizes his worn out opponent.
It’s just shocking the amount of punishment Yi Long takes, seemingly without noticing. It’s unreal. It starts at about 21 seconds in. And it’s not like Yi Long has crap defense, he just lets the other guy take his best shots. He seems to feel it for a sec (although that may actually just be more strategy), but then goes on a tear.
The fight is actually from November 2013, but it’s making the rounds again on sites like Viral Thread, because, well, it’s awesome and you can’t keep a good viral video down. Yi Long has been in the headlines before though.
In 2010, he went up against an American cop and ex-Marine named Adrien Grotte. The fight was billed as a the “No. 1 Shaolin Monk” against a marine. The official Shaolin Temple didn’t take kindly to that, and quickly replied that Yi Long was not a Shaolin Monk at all.
Grotte went on to win the fight, and Yi Long disappeared for a bit, possibly to instigate a training montage.
He came back with a vengeance and a new strategy to apparently not feel pain. He put together a few spectacular performances like this one, then went on to fight Grotte in a rematch in late 2014. Yi Long won convincingly by knockout.
