"The Clients". To everyone's surprise, two law students' balls were held in the Sofiensaal during the carnival season of 1864: on 18th January the traditional ball of the University of Vienna law students took place. On 2nd February 1864 the juridical aid society, which has as its mission assiting needy students and young interns, invited the public to its carnival celebration, also in the Sofiensaal. Josef Staruss had no choice but to compose another waltz score: it would be called Die Clienten, contained no dedication note and did not appear in print until May 1864 as opus 156, at an appropiate interval after the Petitionen waltz. Insofar the quality of invention and thoughful arrangement are concerned, there is no difference between the two compositions. They reamined for the rest of the year in the Strauss orchestra's respertoire and then gave way to the novelties of the carnival season of 1865.
