Hans Richter (1888-1976), painter and filmmaker , was introduced to abstract art in 1912. He moved from Germany to Switzerland in 1916, where he joined the Dada movement and began film experiments. Richter wrote: "The cinema can fulfill certain promises made by the ancient arts, in the realization of which painting and film become close neighbors and work together." Richter continued filmmaking in the United States after 1940. The readings on the soundtrack are fragments from several poems by Dadaist Hugo Ball.
