Tens of thousands rally in anti-U.S. protest outside former embassy in Tehran
- 5 years ago
In the biggest anti-American rally seen in Iran in years, tens of thousands of demonstrators on Monday packed the streets outside the former U.S. embassy in Tehran.
Such protests happen every year to mark the anniversary of the 1979 embassy takeover following the Islamic Revolution.
Protesters chanted "death of America" and set fire to American flags.
The crowds also criticized Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who backed President Hassan Rouhani's overtures to the U.S. and efforts to end the impasse with the West over Tehran's nuclear program.
