When Craig Breedlove broke the land speed record in 1963 on the Bonneville Salt Flats, his Spirit of America jet car was equipped with a piece of technology that gave him a huge advantage over everyone else, most notably his land speed rival Art Arfons. Not many people know about this, about how far out on the technological edge Breedlove’s Spirit of America actually was...and how it predated an important development in motor racing by almost a decade. (Hint: Dan Gurney and the Indy 500.)
