Women took part in a beauty contest wearing traditional costumes and bikinis in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, on January 4.

The competitors also showed off their personalities and general knowledge by answering the questions on current affairs, history and geography.

The festival has been hosted annually during the winter season for the last 87 years.

The top prize of THB100,000 (2,539GBP) went to the winner Alexandra Hänggi, 20, who was the first-ever Thai-German winner of Miss Chiang Mai beauty pageant.

Alexandra will follow triumph by being a ''province ambassador'' and takes part in Miss Thailand later this year.
