00:00Wells Fargo carried much of the wealth of the West, and business was good.
00:26Too good sometimes, because it attracted the wrong kind of attention.
00:30Train robberies became a fine art, cleverly planned and daringly carried out.

02:37There'd been a holdup near Globe, Arizona, a week or so back, and the home office was jumpy.
02:42So they sent me. When I got to Globe, I was to ride shotgun on the 3 o'clock stage, which was to pick up a $20,000 payroll.
02:51My plan was to make the water hold by dusk, to push on the first thing the next morning to Globe.
02:57The only trouble was, another man who called himself Jim Hardy got to Globe first.
03:03♪
03:08Well, he's right on time.
03:10That sure got it straight. If this works, I'll sure have to hand it to you, Lee.
03:15It's foolproof.
03:16Hardy's no fool.
03:19I'll handle him.
03:22Go on.

03:57Who goes there?
03:59Friend, mister.
04:09Howdy.
04:11How are you?
04:12Bedding down?
04:14Yeah.
04:15Say, aren't you Jim Hardy?
04:19That's right.
04:21My name's George Johnson.
04:23You were pointed out to me in Laredo.
04:27Folks sure think a lot of you there.
04:30Not everybody there is stuck on me.
04:33Give you a hand with the fire?
04:35No.
04:36No, it's all right.
04:38Heading for Globe?
04:42Maybe.
04:43Figures. After that stick-up last week, I was sure you'd come.
04:48It's my job.
04:51Well, guess I'll unload.
04:56Stand up, Hardy. There's a gun on your back.
05:03Just behave yourself and you won't get hurt.
05:07All right, boys.
05:08Coming.
05:11Yes, sir. I kind of figured you'd come a-running after that first stick-up.
05:15Sure is going to make it easy for tomorrow.
05:17I'm going to rob that payroll easy as pie.
05:19Maybe this taught you something.
05:22It taught me something, all right.
05:25I'm not sure just yet what it was.
05:28So that's the great Jim Hardy, huh?
05:31He don't look like so much to me.
05:33He don't feel like much right now, either.
05:35Bill, get his papers.
05:37Lee, tie him up.
05:45Hey, uh...
05:49Yeah.
05:51All I need now is that stocking-legged horse of yours and I'm all set.
05:56Jim Hardy, meet Jim Hardy.
05:59Come on, Lee, shake it up. We've got a long ride ahead of us.
06:05I'd been in trouble before, but nothing like this.
06:08My road agent was riding the globe with my papers to lift the payroll I was supposed to guard.
06:15And then I remembered.
06:18Rawhide stretches when it's wet.
06:20If I could get into the stream without awakening him...
06:38Come on.
07:08Come on.
07:39Come on.
07:58Hardy.
08:09Come on.
08:23The outlaws had at least a three-hour start.
08:26There wasn't a horse that could stand the pace.
08:29And I wouldn't have bet a plug nickel that I could make it in time.
08:39Well, here we are.
08:42I'll go and introduce myself to Wells Fargo.
08:45You know what to do?
08:47Right.
08:49Good luck.
09:08Come on.
09:39Jim.
09:41Pat.
09:43Pat Denway, you little rascal.
09:48Since when does Wells Fargo hire girls?
09:50Well, I just started. Most of the men around here work in the mines.
09:53Gosh, it's good to see you. You still owe me a dinner.
09:56And don't think I've forgotten.
09:58Oh, Jim, this is Mr. Harmon. He's new around here, too. Jim Hardy.
10:03How do you do?
10:04I'm glad to know you.
10:05I'm glad to know you. Well, my identification.
10:12Oh, it's a real pleasure to meet you, Mr. Hardy.
10:15Believe me, I'm glad you're here.
10:17Twenty thousand dollars in the safe. I've hardly slept.
10:21Especially after that robbery last week.
10:23Well, stop worrying. The money's as good as delivered.
10:26You'll never know how relieved I am that you finally came.
10:30The stage doesn't get in until three.
10:33You just stick with it, Mr. Harmon. When I get back to the home office,
10:37I'm going to put in a good word for you.
10:39That's very nice of you, Mr. Hardy. That's very nice indeed.
10:42Think nothing of it.
10:44By the way, if I'm going to guard the money, how's it packed?
10:49Did I overlook something?
10:51Well, you can't tell.
10:53You mind if I have a look at it?
10:55No, of course not. Come in.
11:19There you are.
11:28Looks fine. Tied right at the knots.
11:30That's your protection, you know.
11:31Yes, I know.
11:32They're sealed when you get them and they're sealed when they leave.
11:34You got nothing to worry about at the other end.
11:36That's right.
11:37Jim knows all the tricks.
11:39Oh, one other thing, Mr. Harmon.
11:42Never let anyone back here when you're opening that safe.
11:44You know, some crook might watch you and learn that combination.
11:48You're about the only one I'd let come back here, Mr. Hardy.
11:52Pat, I'm short of breakfast.
11:54How about joining me? Coffee or something?
11:56Well, if Mr. Harmon doesn't object...
11:58Oh, of course not. Go right ahead. Take all the time you like.
12:04If this horse had a heart, I'd make it.
12:06If he quit or came up lane, goodbye, 20,000.
12:09And if anything went haywire, goodbye to the lives of some good Wells Fargo men.
12:16Best meal I've had in a long time.
12:18The main thing is to be out of town before that stage gets in.
12:21They won't miss the cash until they open the safe.
12:24Then we'll be well on our way to Nogales.
12:26I sure hope so.
12:28Now, when we get back to the office, I'll get rid of Harmon. You can open the safe.
12:32I sure hope you can remember that combination.
12:34Will you stop worrying?
12:36I worry about everything.
12:39See you back at the office.
12:52How's it look, Quirt?
12:54Like Christmas in July.
12:57I'm gonna ditch Hardy's horse.
12:59The Wells Fargo horse is dynamite, so get a new one for me and one for Pat.
13:02Bring them around to the office in a half hour.
13:05Be ready to leave when we come out.
13:07I'll be ready.
13:12If things broke right, I'd make Globe in half an hour.
13:16But I wasn't counting on it. A lot could happen in a half an hour.
13:20That was the first time I saw Billy the Kid.
13:24Sheriff!
13:25Heard Jim Hardy was here. Never had the pleasure.
13:27I'm Jim Hardy.
13:29Jake Carlson. Good to know you, Mr. Hardy.
13:31Good to know you, Sheriff.
13:33Expecting trouble?
13:34Well, you... you never can tell.
13:36Well, if you do, just holler.
13:38See you.
13:39Bye, Cliff.
13:44You were telling me about Billy the Kid, Mr. Hardy.
13:47Oh, uh...
13:50Miss Stanton! What's the matter?
13:52Pat!
13:53Oh, she's sick, can't you see?
13:55Get some water.
13:56Pat.
13:57Pat!
14:00I don't understand. She was all right a minute ago.
14:02Well, just don't stand there. Get a doctor.
14:04Yes, sir.
14:05Here.
14:09I like taking candy from a baby.
14:11You know, you almost had me fooled for a moment.
14:13I own my breath.
14:15How far is the doctor?
14:16Down the street.
14:17Watch the door.
14:22Okay.
14:53They're coming.
14:58Hurry.
14:59Get back to your desk.
15:06How is she?
15:07Well, I can't figure it.
15:08She... she began to feel better almost as soon as you left.
15:11Oh, I'm sorry to cause all this trouble.
15:13This is Jim Hardy, Dr. Hill.
15:15And this is Miss Stanton.
15:17Miss Stanton.
15:19I'm sorry to cause all this trouble.
15:21This is Jim Hardy, Dr. Hill.
15:23What happened to you, young lady?
15:25Well, nothing really, doctor.
15:27It's just that it's so stuffy in here.
15:29I think if I could get some fresh air, I...
15:31It's a good idea, but just the same, you drop by my office later on.
15:35I will.
15:36Thank you, Dr. Hill.
15:37Anytime, Cliff, anytime.
15:40Pat, you better come out with me for some fresh air.
15:43Good idea, Jim.
15:46Cliff!
16:03I'll take your gun, mister.
16:05Sheriff, listen to me.
16:06There's nothing to listen to.
16:08Come on.
16:12There go the people you want, there.
16:14No tricks, mister.
16:17My name's Jim Hardy.
16:18Yeah, and my name's Grover Cleveland.
16:21You're under arrest.
16:23Let's take these horses.
16:24Come on.
16:35Take it easy, now.
16:36I only want to attract attention.
16:37You're making a mistake, Sheriff.
16:39Don't tell me my business.
16:40Use your head.
16:41I warned you.
16:44This man drew first.
16:45Maybe.
16:46It looked kind of close from where I stood.
16:48I say it's self-defense.
16:49He's right, Sheriff.
16:50I saw it, too.
16:51This man drew first.
16:52Thanks.
16:53This man and two others jumped me at the water hole.
16:56They stole my papers.
16:57I tell you, the Wells Fargo agent introduced me to Jim Hardy.
17:01He introduced you to a man who claimed to be Jim Hardy.
17:03That's the one that stole my paper...
17:05And he also stole my horse.
17:07A red Zara with four stoggan legs.
17:09Hey, there's a horse down in front of your office now that answers that description.
17:12Yeah?
17:13I'll prove it to you.
17:14Come on.
17:30I told you, since.
17:32By the time Hardy convinces him, it'll be too late.
17:35Come on.
17:38If this is a joke, you'll be the sorriest man in Arizona.
17:41What did I tell you?
17:42What did I tell you?
17:43Four white stockings.
17:44Yeah.
17:45You know, I haven't had a chance to see him since I've been here.
17:48Go on time.
17:50All right.
18:01Come here.
18:02Hurry up.
18:03Come on, boy.
18:07Well, what do you think?
18:08What do you think?
18:11Let's go see the agent.
18:17Cliff, do you know this man?
18:19No.
18:20Why should he?
18:21He's new here.
18:22My name's Jim Hardy.
18:24There must be some mistake.
18:26Mr. Hardy left here a few minutes ago.
18:28He was an imposter.
18:29His name's Johnson.
18:30He stole my papers.
18:31Where did he go?
18:32Why?
18:33He...
18:34Speak up.
18:35He left here with my clerk, Miss Stanton.
18:37It's probably a plant.
18:38Open the safe.
18:39But I...
18:40Open it up.
18:41Should be $20,000 in Copper Queen's payroll in there.
18:44I don't understand.
18:45His...
18:46His papers were in order.
18:53It's empty.
18:54I'll get a posse together.
18:57Where do you suppose he went?
18:58Who knows?
18:59Phoenix, Lordsburg, Nogales.
19:00You get your men on the road.
19:02I'll see what I can find out.
19:03All right.
19:07Come on.
19:38What's so funny?
19:40Oh, I'd love to have seen Hardy's face
19:42trying to convince the sheriff who he is.
19:44You should have gotten rid of him back at the water hole
19:46when you had the chance.
19:47Can't figure out how he got away from Bill.
19:50Yeah, maybe Bill's wondering that, too.
19:52If he's alive.
19:54You're smart, Quirt, but you're soft.
19:58I'm sorry.
19:59I'm sorry.
20:00I'm sorry.
20:01I'm sorry.
20:02I'm sorry.
20:03I'm sorry.
20:04I'm sorry.
20:05I'm sorry.
20:07We've got the payroll.
20:08We're in the clear.
20:09What more do you want?
20:11I'd like to be in Nogales.
20:13It's a long way off,
20:14and a lot can happen before we get there.
20:17Stop worrying.
20:18Come on.
20:31Sometimes you have to play a hunch.
20:33I was hoping this was a trail.
20:34Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't.
20:35I wouldn't know until I sighted it,
20:37and that might be too late.
20:54How stupid can you be, coming off of that water?
20:57The moment we left, we weren't thinking about water.
21:01Pat, look.
21:02Hardy.
21:06Now what?
21:07If I had a rifle.
21:08You haven't got one.
21:09It's been one fool mistake after another.
21:11I got an idea.
21:12Get off your horse.
21:27Well, what's that for?
21:28I'm going to leave you with a lame horse.
21:30Now you put on as if I kidnapped you.
21:32I'll be up behind the boulders.
21:34Hardy won't even know what hit him.
21:36Now you're talking.
21:37But my horse isn't lame.
21:39He will be.
21:40I'm going to tie this around his ankle.
21:42Real tight.
21:43Cuts off the circulation.
21:44It'll make him limp as if he were lame.
21:54And after I take care of Hardy,
21:56take off the hair,
21:57and the ankle's as good as new again.
21:59Come on, come on.
22:00He'll be here any minute.
22:02Now look.
22:03You stand clear of him.
22:04Give me an open shot.
22:06I wouldn't want to hit you, baby.
22:26Go.
22:57It seems to be your trouble, ma'am.
23:03Well, ain't nothing that bad.
23:10I'm so glad you came.
23:12I thought he was going to kill me.
23:14Who?
23:15Well, the man who robbed Wells Fargo.
23:17I'm Pat Denton, Mr. Harmon's clerk.
23:20And I'm here to tell you
23:22I'm Pat Denton, Mr. Harmon's clerk.
23:26He made me open that safe.
23:29And you knew the combination?
23:32Well, the clerk always does
23:33in case something happens to the agent.
23:36Yes, yes, of course.
23:39And then my horse went lame.
23:46He just left me here.
23:49If you hadn't come along,
23:50I don't know what would have happened.
23:55You fool, you stupid fool!
24:15It hits you where it hurts.
24:17Finding out a woman's no better than a man.
24:19It's something you never get used to.
24:22But one thing Quirt taught me,
24:24as he said he would,
24:26from then on my description was sent ahead
24:28to any Wells Fargo station my job took me to.
24:31We try not to make the same mistake twice.
