The Dhari Devi temple located in the Alaknanda riverbank in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal is one of the famous religious sites in the state. Call it a faith or co-incidence, visitors to the shrine believed that angering the Dhari Devi, a goddess considered as the guardian deity of the ‘Char Dhams’ in the Himalayas, will lead in destruction. On June 16, 2013, the idol of the goddess was uprooted from its ancient temple for a hydel-power project. However, hours after the idol was moved a cloudburst hit the Kedarnath valley, washing away the entire shrine town and killing hundreds of people.
