01:00In all my adventures throughout the world, none were as amazing as the fantastic trip
01:14I made to the South Seas in the summer of 1874.
01:19I had heard about native curses and the native taboo, but never believed in them until I
01:25actually saw with my own eyes how it affected the lives of those people who were with me
01:30on that never-to-be-forgotten trip.
01:33This is the story of the Oumu-Tabu and the Shark God.
01:38We were two weeks out of San Francisco aboard the Schooner Julia, bound for Teviti, just
01:48off the tip of Sumatra.
01:50I was a ship's doctor aboard the Julia, which was owned and captained by Roger Guy, who
01:55had a reputation for brutality.
01:58Aside from being shorthanded, the crew were an odd lot, picked up on the waterfront in
02:03San Francisco, hard men and quarrelsome.
02:07Each man had his own reason for signing on.
02:12First there was Richard's.
02:13This was his first trip as mate.
02:15He liked the authority that went with the job.
02:20Then there was Texas.
02:21Texas was quite a character, first time he'd ever been to sea, and a man who called himself
02:28Chips.
02:29Chips was a sly one, always currying favor with Richard.
02:34Then there was Jeff Garland.
02:36Garland never said much about himself, but he was a good sailor.
02:39But while a few fights had broken out, the boys hadn't been as bad as expected.
02:48The captain was sick, very sick, with a sickness I couldn't fathom at that time.
02:56One evening, I was with him in his cabin.
03:00Oh, Julie.
03:05Oh, that stuff does me no good.
03:11Take it away.
03:12Oh, father, please.
03:15You and your pills and your syrups, get out.
03:19Aye, aye, captain.
03:23Who are you?
03:29Well, answer me.
03:33What are you doing here?
03:35I have no stowaway on my ship.
03:37Now, what are you up to?
03:41Nothing, please.
03:44Did it take the two of you?
03:46Stay out of this, Garland, I'm made here.
03:49Get your hands off me.
04:04No, Father, please don't.
04:28Mr. Richards, this is the third time a fight has broken out aboard this ship.
04:42If it happens again, I won't shoot into the air.
04:44Well, Garland started it, Captain.
04:46When I found that native he'd been hiding, he came at me.
04:49That's a lie, Captain.
04:50Shut up, both of you.
04:52Garland, if we weren't shorthanded, you'd be in irons for mutiny.
04:57If you can't handle this crew, Mr. Richards, I'll get a first mate that can.
05:02Put that native to work and get this ship back on her course.
05:05And keep her there.
05:06Aye, aye, sir.
05:07Who's been feeding the native?
05:08Well, Tex and I raided the galley a couple of times.
05:12He didn't go hungry.
05:15You made a good friend, then.
05:28I made mean friends.
05:30That ambition, huh?
05:31There's money in Copra.
05:32Copra?
05:33Aren't we out for Copra?
05:34Say, just where are we heading?
05:35And while we're talking, what's wrong with the Captain?
05:43One thing at a time.
05:44Copra?
05:45No.
05:46There isn't a case of trade goods in the ship.
05:49No trade goods, no Copra.
05:52As to where?
05:53Well, we're headed for an island named Tevide.
05:56Tevide?
05:57What's there?
05:58I don't know.
05:59And the Captain, what's his trouble?
06:02If I knew for sure, maybe I could cure him.
06:05Maybe not.
06:15No man could call me a liar.
06:17Wait till you get to Tevide.
06:19Then leave him stranded on the beach.
06:21Maybe I will, if we ever get there.
06:24What's that place like, anyway?
06:26It's a good place to stay away from snakes and wild animals.
06:31Especially what happened after the last time he was there.
06:34Captain Guy was up to his usual tricks.
06:36What happened?
06:38Pearls was mixed up in it somewhere.
06:43Pearls?
06:44Yeah.
06:47Heard him raving one night.
06:49He said, pearls, big ones.
06:53Pearls like that would be worth quite a lot.
06:56Yes, but he didn't get away with them.
06:58How do you know that?
06:59It'd be handy to be rich, wouldn't it?
07:02You don't see any signs of it, do you?
07:05Fact is, I heard Miss Julie and him talking about putting his last savings in this trip.
07:09But if he had the pearls when he was on Tevide, he didn't bring them on.
07:13They must be there.
07:15Somewhere.
07:17If a man found those pearls, he could be rich.
07:20Yeah.
07:24We could.
07:34For a few days, everything was quiet.
07:36Little boy Tembo seemed to be learning our ways fast.
07:40The crew was working hard and there had been no more fights.
07:46Richard was behaving himself.
07:48But there was still a feeling of unrest, like waiting for an explosion.
07:52The nights and days were getting more balmy.
07:55We were nearing the South Sea.
07:58The captain was getting steadily worse.
08:01I didn't let the crew know just how sick he was because...
08:05Well, I just didn't know the real cause of his illness.
08:10When do we get to Tevide?
08:12Soon, if the wind holds.
08:15I've been thinking about buying myself a couple of pearls when I get there.
08:19Pearls.
08:21I've heard tell that bad luck to some people, Captain.
08:25What's your guess on that?
08:28Pearls? Bad luck?
08:32That's right, Mr. Richards.
08:35I had some pearls once.
08:37Big ones?
08:39Two of them.
08:41Black ones, they were, worth a fortune.
08:43A fortune? You had them?
08:46Where'd you get them?
08:47The eyes of the shark god.
08:49I had them right in my hands.
08:51What became of them? Still have them tucked away?
08:54It was my life for the pearls.
08:57I might have gotten away if...
09:00I don't know anything about jungles.
09:02I've been in a few of them around the world.
09:04Snakes, animals.
09:07What jungle are you talking about?
09:08On the island of Tevide.
09:11Nothing but natives and native laws and native drums.
09:16Drums.
09:18Always the drums.
09:20Drums.
09:22Drums.
09:23Drums.
09:25Drums.
09:31Drums.
09:33Drums.
09:35Drums.
09:37Drums.
09:40Drums.
09:43Drums.
09:46I was a murderer.
09:48Captain, very sick.
09:49You give Captain Temboo's medicine.
09:51Make him stronger.
09:52Hurry.
09:54Wake me up.
09:55What's this?
09:56No time now.
09:57Hurry.
09:58before moon leave.
10:00Timbo speak later.
10:02Better give this to the doc.
10:09Doc.
10:10Hey, wake up.
10:12Take on Teviti.
10:14Timbo live on Teviti.
10:15Teviti medicine.
10:16Only thing will help.
10:17Hurry.
10:19Dr. Long.
10:20Doc.
10:24Why can't you get him up?
10:25My father...
10:26Julie, I came to get the doc too.
10:29Timbo has a medicine for your father.
10:32He says it'll make him get stronger.
10:34Well, I can't give my father any medicine
10:36without the doctor knowing what it is.
10:38I'm afraid the doc won't be any help for quite a while.
10:45What's in this medicine?
10:47What'll it do to him?
10:49How do I know that you didn't purposely get the doctor drunk?
10:53How do I know that you and the whole crew
10:55don't want my father to die so you can take over the ship?
10:58How do I know what...
10:59How do I know anything?
11:03Are you telling the truth?
11:04Timbo, no lie.
11:11Miss Julie.
11:15I know it's a long chance.
11:18But you've got to try everything.
11:20Anything.
11:25Come on.
11:26Come on.
11:55Come on.
12:25Come on.
12:43What did that native do to the captain last night?
12:45Humphrey Long, M.D.
12:48Mostly drunk.
12:52I asked you what Timbo did to the captain.
12:54How can a man of your education and background allow him...
12:56This helps.
12:58Sure, I'm a drunkard.
13:00Think I'd be in the sky if I weren't?
13:02When a doctor deserts his patient...
13:03Wait a minute, Jeff.
13:05There's nothing you can say to me that Julie hasn't already said.
13:11Probably much better, too.
13:17Now tell me.
13:18Just what did Timbo do?
13:20What did he do?
13:21He gave him some medicine.
13:23Sure, I know.
13:24Sugar water and tea leaves.
13:26But what did he do before or just after he gave him the stuff?
13:29I don't know.
13:31He was looking out of a porthole up at the sky.
13:35And he came back and gave him the medicine.
13:37Did he make any gestures or say anything?
13:39He mumbled something.
13:40Could you understand what he said?
13:42No.
13:43Then what?
13:45He poured the medicine into a glass of water.
13:47Made some signs over the glass and he gave it to him.
13:50Anything else?
13:52No, but he was right about that medicine.
13:56I should have known the minute I saw that native on board.
14:00Jeff, there's nothing wrong with a captain that medicine can cure.
14:03There's no broken bones.
14:04There's no infection.
14:05There's no physical ailment of any kind.
14:07You better lay off that liquor.
14:09Somewhere along the line, the captain ran up against a native taboo.
14:12And he broke it.
14:14Taboo?
14:15Now look, Doc.
14:17Natives might believe that hocus-pocus, but...
14:19You're a man of science.
14:21Science only believes in black and white.
14:23But there are many shades of gray in between.
14:26Someday you'll learn.
14:28Maybe.
14:32Miss Julie doesn't believe that taboo stuff, does she?
14:36No, I doubt if she's even heard about it.
14:39I hope she never will.
14:43How is Timbo doing in San Francisco?
14:48Timbo!
14:49Timbo, come here.
14:55Come below. I want to talk to you.
15:02What is all this taboo business with the captain?
15:05How do you know this?
15:06Never mind. Give me the whole story.
15:08From the beginning.
15:20You saved Timbo's life.
15:22You're no brother to Timbo.
15:24You shall know.
15:29One year ago, Captain Guy came to Tevita...
15:32to trade with my people, the Oumu.
15:36Tari, my father, chief of Oumu...
15:39treated Captain like a friend.
15:42One night, Captain sneaked...
15:45One night, Captain sneaked to the shrine of Shark God.
15:51He steal eyes of Shark God.
15:54Without eyes, Shark God no see.
15:58Wait a minute. Why did he take the eyes?
16:01Eyes. Two big black pearls.
16:04Come on.
16:06Since Shark God no see, my people have very bad time.
16:10No rain.
16:12No crops.
16:14Fishing very bad.
16:16Captain is broke. He couldn't have sold the pearls.
16:19Pearls still on Tevita.
16:21And only Captain know where.
16:23When Captain himself returned pearls to Shark God...
16:27Captain get better.
16:29So this is the reason for the native curse, huh?
16:32The law of my people say...
16:34to steal is taboo.
16:36Captain break taboo.
16:38Captain very sick.
16:40Doc was right.
16:44What are you doing in San Francisco?
16:46My father send me.
16:48Bring Captain back.
16:56One day the Julia had sailed into the lee of an uncharted reef.
16:59And we will be calm for two days.
17:02The Captain's condition was no better.
17:04And yet it wasn't any worse.
17:06I saw Julie at the rail.
17:09Morning, Julie.
17:11Good morning.
17:15Your...
17:17Father seems to be doing better this morning.
17:20Yes, thanks to Tembo.
17:23Yes.
17:25Tembo and his medicine.
17:27Water looks calm enough to go swimming.
17:30I wouldn't if I were you.
17:32Why not?
17:34I want to show you something.
17:36On the surface the water looks smooth and calm.
17:39But underneath there are strange and dangerous things happening.
17:42Do you see that strange little fish?
17:44He seems content.
17:49There's a strange one.
17:51He's probably just as mean as he looks.
17:53There's a happy little fellow.
18:01Wait a minute.
18:02Look over there by that rock.
18:08One of the most vicious killers of the deep.
18:10An octopus.
18:17Now there's our unsuspecting friend.
18:19He's heading for trouble.
18:41But the octopus doesn't give up so easily.
18:53Now watch that moray eel.
18:55Deadly enemy of the octopus.
19:40News of the fight must be spreading.
20:40Now the rest of the fish see their chance to get rid of their mortal enemy.
20:44For as long as that octopus lives, there can be no peace.
21:41I thought you might help me.
21:43I'd like to repay Tembo in some way for his kindness to my father.
21:47I'm sure Tembo doesn't expect any...
21:50Oh no. I didn't mean that.
21:52I meant...
21:54Well, if there was something I could do to show how grateful I am.
21:58I'd like to thank you for everything.
22:00You're welcome.
22:02You're welcome.
22:04You're welcome.
22:06You're welcome.
22:08To show how grateful I am.
22:10Tembo is more than satisfied to get back home to his people in Tevide.
22:14If Tembo could help my father in just one treatment, I know the native doctor will cure him.
22:18Native doctor?
22:20Why yes, that's why we're going to Tevide.
22:22To see this doctor.
22:26I see.
22:29Where'd you get that?
22:32Isn't that the one Tembo had?
22:35He hung it around my neck.
22:37It's a sort of symbol.
22:40Symbol? Symbol of what?
22:42It's a strange looking thing.
22:44Well...
22:46He thought I saved his life the night Richards found him stowing away.
22:51He says it's a...
22:53medal or something.
22:55Oh.
22:57The natives are full of superstitions.
22:59I suppose you know that.
23:01I don't know very much about natives.
23:03This is my first trip anywhere.
23:05Oh, I see.
23:12The night is so soft.
23:14Softest I've ever seen.
23:24Get below, Gollum.
23:26What?
23:29I said, get below.
23:38Good night, Miss Julie.
23:40Good night, Jeff.
23:43I wouldn't mingle with the crew if I were you, Miss Julie.
23:46It doesn't look right.
23:48Your father and I...
23:49I don't think that's any of your business.
23:58The breeze was holy.
24:00We were in the South Seas.
24:04The excitement among the crew was very evident.
24:06The excitement of an expectant landfall.
24:14Land ho!
24:16Land ho!
24:20As we approached Aviti, a small party of us prepared to go ashore.
24:24I wondered what was in store for us.
24:27In fact, I guess we all wondered.
24:30We sailed inside the barrier reef, skirted the shoreline,
24:34and finally dropped anchor in the lagoon.
24:38I had a feeling we were being watched constantly as we came ashore.
24:43We started toward the village with Tembo leading the way.
24:57Tembo, go. You wait.
24:59What do you mean, wait?
25:00We're going to the village. I'm captain here.
25:03Captain sick. Tembo bring help.
25:06Carry captain to belly.
25:09Jeff, you come.
25:27Whee!
25:51Whee!
25:58Tembo home.
26:13You have done well, my son.
26:17This, Jeff Garland.
26:20He brother to Tembo.
26:22He saved Tembo's life.
26:24Welcome, Tembo's brother.
26:28This, Tala.
26:32When shark gods see again, Tala and Tembo have wedding ceremony.
26:38Bring captain and others here now.
26:41Yes, my father.
26:55Wait a minute.
26:57Look.
27:14I'm not waiting any longer.
27:16I'm going to the village.
27:19Drums.
27:27Drums.
27:38Drums.
27:49Stop the drums.
27:51No, no. You can't have them. They're mine.
27:53The eyes of the shark god. They're mine.
27:55No, you can't have them, I say.
27:57Stop the drums.
27:59Stop them! Stop the drums!
28:02Take it easy, captain.
28:05They're mine, I tell you. They're mine.
28:08The shrine. The shrine.
28:18The shrine.
28:24Oh, Jeff, we must get to that native doctor as quickly as possible.
28:27Don't worry. Everything's going to be all right.
28:49Shrine.
29:01Captain said something about a shrine. Know anything about it?
29:03No.
29:19Tigers talk each other.
29:24When they meet, they fight.
29:48Go quick.
30:18Tiger gets man's scent.
30:29Village.
30:38The doctor. Where's the doctor?
30:44I tell you, I'm doctor.
30:46Well, can't you please do something?
30:48My father's very sick.
30:50We've come all this way just to see you. Please do something.
31:03I was fascinated as I watched from outside the native hut.
31:08As a doctor, I knew that Terry's medicine was a harmless potion.
31:17The secrets seem to lie in the strange native prayer...
31:21and their belief in the power of the shark god.
31:47Oh.
31:55Captain's better now.
32:08Why can't the captain go to the shrine tonight?
32:11After all, the quicker we get this over with, the better it'll be for everyone.
32:14I'm worried about Julie.
32:17It is written in law of shark god...
32:20three nights from now, moon will cross path of great sky bird.
32:25On third night, not before...
32:29shark god must again have eyes...
32:32or more trouble to Omu tribe.
32:45Go. Prepare shrine.
32:49Dala is honored.
33:14As Dala walks through the jungle alone and unafraid...
33:17I realized that a native taboo could actually affect human beings...
33:22because it was based on faith.
33:45Superstitions based upon fear and strange customs were their inheritance.
33:50These simple natives believed in an idol, the shark god...
33:54whose eyes had been stolen.
33:57And so their idol could not see good from evil.
34:00And the poor natives thought that their troubles were brought about...
34:03by the wrath of their god.
34:06I knew that if the eyes of their shark god were not restored...
34:10that none of us would ever leave the island alive.
34:25Did you find out anything about that shrine?
34:27No, not yet.
34:29What are you worrying about the shrine for? It's the pearls we want.
34:31They've got to be around that shrine.
34:33I heard the captain babbling about the pearls, the eyes of the shark god, the shrine.
34:37It all fits in together, I tell you.
34:39All right, all right. Supposing we do find the shrine.
34:41We've still got to find the pearls.
34:43What about the natives? They'll be watching us.
34:45Not yet. They're still watching the captain.
34:47Speaking of natives, they seem to like Garland a lot.
34:50You suppose he's found the pearls?
34:52If he had them, he'd be gone already.
34:54As for Garland, the natives may like him, but the captain don't.
34:57I've seen to that.
34:59The captain may not like him.
35:01Look out there.
35:07Look out there.
35:28Captain. Captain, wake up.
35:31What do you want?
35:33I know you didn't come to Teviti to see no doctor.
35:37You came to get some pearls you got hidden here somewhere, right?
35:43Pearls?
35:44You'll never get them off the island alone. You need help.
35:47You tried once and failed.
35:49You surprise me, Richards.
35:51You seem to know quite a bit.
35:54Nobody's watching me.
35:56Be easy for me to get them.
36:00You know, Richards, they're the most beautiful pearls in the world.
36:05Big black ones, huh?
36:07Wait till you see them, Richards.
36:09Worth a fortune, huh?
36:10King's ransom.
36:12The first time I saw them, they were the eyes of the shark god.
36:16They seemed to look into my very soul.
36:19I had so much fun in school.
36:22I'm really happy now.
36:25Father is getting well.
36:28We'll be on our way home soon.
36:30And everything is...
36:33Mr. Garland.
36:36You're not paying any attention to me.
36:39Attention?
36:42I love you.
36:47Jeff.
36:49You ought to see our house in San Francisco.
36:52It's overlooking the...
36:59And at night, when the lights are on, you can almost see...
37:10That's why I risked everything, even my life, to come back here and get them.
37:14Tell me where they are. I'll get them.
37:16They're under the...
37:19Water. Water.
37:24Never mind the water, Richards.
37:27Don't draw.
37:30I wouldn't tell you or anyone else where the pearls are.
37:34They're mine.
37:36They're mine, I tell you.
37:38They're mine.
37:40No!

40:12Pearls? What do you know about the pearls?
40:15Julie, not now. Not now.
40:19I'm not going to tell him anything.
40:22Why should I?
40:24He didn't cure my father. He killed him.
40:32Why those drums beating?
40:35Why?
40:37Why?
40:49Poor Julie.
40:51She inherited her father's taboo.
40:54An innocent child whose only crime was being the daughter of a thief.
40:58It was more difficult now, knowing what the illness was.
41:02Still, there was nothing I could do.
41:05We were at the mercy of the fantastic laws of Oahu.
41:10The next night, Julie was much worse.
41:13I'll be close by if she awakens.
41:15I'll be close by if she awakens.
