An ancient tree, between 120 and 250 years old, may be cut down as it grows on top of a 600-year-old pagoda in southern China.

The video filmed in Jiande city shows on the south peak of the ancient town of Jiande City, Zhejiang stands an ancient seven-storey brick pagoda called Nanfeng Pagoda. Nanfeng Tower is more than 600 years old and was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty.

Recently, experts found that the root of the tree on top of the Pagoda had caused some cracks in the pagoda. To protect the ancient pagoda, the tree may have to be cut off.

Experts believe that the Pistacia Chinensis tree has a diameter of 50-60 centimetres at the base of the trunk, and the tree is between 120 and 250 years old. It is really rare for the tree to grow to this size and survive many years of drought and rain.

The Jiande Cultural Protection Centre has agreed with the Zhejiang Tourism Group that the Nanfeng Tower will be protected and repaired. Professional cultural protection design units will be invited to evaluate if the ancient tree has to be cut off to protect the ancient pagoda.

The video was filmed on July 27 and provided by local media.
